Should be ranked much higher for restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. Absolutely excellent! Great staff and very well priced.
Went for dinner and staff was very friendly but wanted to push the ‘specials’. Looked over the menu and the prices didn’t seem that bad. About $400-500 pesos for a steak. One of the specials was a ribeye but I stupidly didn’t ask the prices…because I saw the other prices on the menu and figured it would be in line. Boy was I wrong. Steak was cooked wrong and over half of it was fat. We were tired from traveling so I didn’t feel like sending it back. Then we get the bill! $1200 pesos ea (my son had the same). That’s about $60usd for a steak that I could’ve had at Dennys. When I got the bill I was shocked but paid and the waitress looked shocked for some reason…I guess looking back she was surprised I didn’t complain. Most expensive meal I had in PV and we went to some nice places. Also the worst meal I had. Never went back. Live and learn but I only get taken once. Rest of the food was mediocre at best. I would avoid this ripoff joint. Walk to the marina and get much better food for a normal price.More
Lots of potential, but there are a few things that really bring down the enjoyment of the experience. Overall, the food we’ve had here has tasted quite good, but not quite to the level that I would expect in terms of seasoning and the finer…details considering the relatively higher price point. The good: -Very nicely decorated and the dining area outside has great lighting. -Food has beautiful presentation, and all the serving ware (plates, etc.) is unique and makes the meals look very appealing. -Good variety in menu choices, and overall our meals there have tasted good The bad: -By far our biggest gripe with this restaurant is the music that is played in the dining area. First of all, it is far too loud. Even though the restaurant is outside and there aren’t any echo issues, our small table had to almost yell to be heard, and it seemed like a few of the waiters had hoarse voices from having to shout all day long over the music. The music also does not fit the “classy” vibe of the restaurant at all. It was a mix of old music videos ranging from classic rock to sad-sounding emotional songs, and the corresponding videos playing on the overhead TVs were very distracting and made us feel more like we were in a sports bar rather than a nice restaurant. The overly loud music creates a stressful environment, and background music that fits the restaurant vibe better (or at least turning the volume down) would be a major upgrade in my opinion. -Service wasn’t too bad, but we felt that at times it felt like the waiters were distracted.More
This restaurant was simply perfect. We had breakfast on our last day so unfortunately we didn’t have a chance to have dinner. Everything was perfect from the food to the service. I highly recommend coming here whether you’re just in downtown or by the marina….10/10 and definitely coming back.More
If you are tired of having to choose between a long cab ride or settling for the horrendously expensive and stunningly mediocre fare in the on-site restaurants of most resort hotels, and if you happen to find yourself staying at any of the beach resort…hotels near the Marina, Ama 1944 is the answer to your prayers. It’s a two minute walk from the Westin, where we were staying. The food is excellent, the service is not only great technically but genuinely friendly and the prices are very reasonable. We stopped in for a late breakfast on our way back from the Marina (where you can find dozens of bad restaurants with higher prices) and were very pleasantly surprised. You can have the typical gringo stuff — eggs benedict etc. or a variety of local dishes. Either way, the ingredients are fresh, the cooking is first rate and the flavors are worth the trip. We came back two days later for lunch and had the same reaction. We both had pork belly in a mole sauce but mine was traditional and my wife’s was green (something I didn’t know mole could be.). Both were excellent. We also got various bread offerings, different at breakfast than at lunch but both excellent and, as an amuse-bouche after lunch, a chocolate coated frozen banana on a stick. Really nice! I was especially happy with the service. Not sure it is a uniquely Mexican thing but the locals here seem to be able to combine doing their jobs well while, at the same time, acting genuinely happy to see you (and not just your credit card.). Our breakfast waitress recognized us immediately when we arrived for lunch and made us feel genuinely at home. Both the food and the service are of a quality way above the prices they charge. It probably matters that they aren’t paying a huge fee to be in a resort or the Marina, they are just on a street, but the value is exceptional. Highly recommend Ama if you are in the area and, if you aren’t it might even be worth a trip. They have a bell by the main door that you can ring if you liked your experience. We rang it with enthusiasm.More
They are big on smoked technique for drinks and entrees. Tried the octopus but it was the toughest I’ve ever had in Mexico. Might as well have been in Italy. Other dishes coming out of the kitchen looked good Tried it for breakfast also, which…was better. My overall observation is that they are trying hard to present high-end food, but not quite getting there in all cases. Convenient to the Westin and Marriott and worth a try. If you are dying for octopus, go to Victor’s on the Marina instead, much better quality.More
Thank you Eduardo, the manager, and the wait staff for making a perfect evening. The food was the best we have had in the Marina area. I asked our waiter if the octopus was tender. He beamed. Oscar the chef deserves a huge thank you!…The octopus was tender with great spices and potatoes done perfectly, stunningly served under glass. Our group had the tempura shrimp, the best guacamole in Puerto Villarta and the fish special, perfectly cooked mahi mahi in orange sauce. Ask for the surprise dessert that comes in a cart with bells attached.More
We stayed at the Westin, so just happened by, stopped had dinner and WOW!! Excellent food. Both soups, roasted tomato and crab chowder were excellent, so flavorful. The farm salad so fresh and great combination of flavors and both filet mignon dishes, one smoked, one…with a blueberry compote we beyond DELICIOUS!!!, cooked to perfection, steak that melts in your mouth, would be hard to choose a favorite. Then the rice pudding dessert was so different and soooooo good. We went back the next night and basically ordered the same thing!! The service was excellent, Daniel was our waiter both nights and he was great. They also were so accommodating about the loud, at first, music. I would not call it pricey at all, not compared to what it would be in the states. Also, the sangria was excellent!! Highly, highly recommend this place.More
Stay just down the road from here and happened to walk in one morning to take breakfast home for the family. Was so happy with the fast service, ability to converse in English and enjoy my broken Spanish. Once I got the food home I…was even more impressed with their amazing chilaquiles (best I have found around their so far) and let me tell you I’m picky. Has to be flavorful red sauce with not too soft of chips. All the fixings. AMAZING. (Even togo!) the pancakes were huge and super fluffy. Went back with the kids to try the food in house and was even more in love with the in-house service of fresh pastries. Cutest coffee ware, great with the kids. 10/10 recommended. Hidden gem for sure (Also, GREAT prices!!) fed family of four breakfast both times for about $25/$30 American dollars. Unheard of in CA!More
We visited here last night for dinner. I had the shrimp with rice and hubs had the catch of the day. Both dishes were cooked perfectly and tasted great! Unfortunately there was one main server with 2 helpers for the entire place so service was…slow once the place filled up.More
The restaurant was a great experience. The waiters and staff were excellent and went out of their way to provide service. The food was great and served in a timely manner. Will definitely return again.
What an amazing eating experience. Newer restaurant with outdoor seating or indoor seating. The reasonable prices masked the 5-star plates. The Catch of the Day with Orange Sauce (doesn’t taste like orange) was one of the best fish plates I’ve experienced around the world. Accompanied…by greens with berries and Grilled asparagus with mushrooms. My wife’s coconut shrimp were seven extra large prawns. The mango chutney was a great dipping sauce. Table side homemade guacamole with local and secret ingredients. We can’t wait to return.More
So, so good. We’ve had a dinner and a breakfast here and everything, from the service to the food to the ambience was outstanding. Would happily return for more. In fact, we DID return. Twice. And would have returned for a fourth visit if not…for inclement weather.More
Great location near our resort so we could walk to the restaurant. Jorge greeted us and waited on us the entire time. Great service! Fun times watching staff “muddle”a personalized salsa at our table that was quite unique Food was good and husband raved about…his salmon. Desserts excellent! Watch for the “special” compliment after dinner! Such fun!More
Excellent food, service , spotless and friendly . This place is a gem in the marina area, a local neighborhood restaurant. Thank you Jorge and staff for the service.
